Every year on November 11, Canadians pause in gratitude and reflection — to remember the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering spirit of those who served our country. At our boutique hotel, we join our community in Sydney, Nova Scotia, in honouring this solemn day and all that it represents.

Our historic hotel has stood through generations of change — from the early days of Cape Breton’s bustling harbour to the quieter moments of remembrance that bring our community together each year. The Royal Hotel has quietly witnessed stories of families reunited, letters sent overseas, and the collective resilience of a nation finding hope after hardship.
As we reflect on Remembrance Day, we remember not only the soldiers who gave their lives, but also the families who carried on with courage, the communities who supported one another, and the freedom their sacrifice made possible.
At 11:00 a.m., we invite our guests and neighbours to join in observing a moment of silence, wherever they may be — in their rooms, in our lobby, or at our local cenotaph. It is a simple but powerful gesture that unites us in gratitude.
Today, the red poppy reminds us that peace is not something to be taken for granted — it is something to be honoured, protected, and cherished.
From all of us at the Royal Hotel, we extend our deepest respect and remembrance to those who have served and to those who continue to serve.
